History
The Edgewater Volunteer First Aid Squad (EVFAS) was established in 1981 and initially shared a building with the Baby Keep Well program across the street from the old Borough Hall. After moving to a few different locations over the years, in October 2018 EVFAS officially celebrated its move to a new home. Coming full circle, the squad is now headquartered in the first floor of the newly renovated former Borough Hall building located at 916 River Rd. The state-of-the-art facilities include a meeting/training room, full kitchen, multiple bedrooms for on-duty EMTs and offices.
Staff
EVFAS presently has approximately 30 certified Emergency Medical Technicians including volunteer firemen who help drive the ambulance.
Training
In addition to maintaining their state-licensed EMT certifications which require 220 hours of initial classwork/training, each member must be certified in CPR, as well as the use of epinephrine injectors, automated external defibrillation (AED) machines, and be knowledgeable in the use and application of other medical devices and equipment. They also take numerous continuing education courses annually to keep their skills up to date so that they may provide the best care possible. These dedicated volunteers are on call seven days a week, 365 days a year to provide emergency pre-hospital medical care to the Edgewater community.Ambulances
EVFAS maintains a mutual aid agreement with surrounding East Bergen Communities, assuring that its fleet of three ambulances is immediately available to respond to calls for assistance in the event of a disaster.
The squad also provides standby assistance to the borough’s firefighters at the scene of a working fire. In addition, the duty crew responds to medical calls for mutual aid requests from surrounding towns in Cliffside Park, Fort Lee and Fairview.
The squad holds Blood Drives in the fall and spring of each year. In addition they have provided emergency medical coverage at special events. You can find them at various events throughout the year such as:
- Gran Fondo
- 4th of July Fireworks
- Recreation Center Sports camps
