Temporary Handicap Placards are valid for six months, and are intended for residents who are expected to heal from a temporary injury. Residents who are in need of temporary placards can call to request (or stop by the station to pick up) the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Services’ Application for Temporary Handicapped Placard. The applicant must then fill out the form, appear before a medical doctor or podiatrist to obtain a signature, and write a check for $4.00 to the N.J. Division of Motor Vehicles. Then return the form with the check for processing to the Records Division at the Police Station (either by mail or in person). At this time the applicant can make arrangements for obtaining the placard, usually by the next business day. Temporary Handicap Placards must be returned to the Records Room upon expiration. Six-month extensions may be granted when necessary.
Permanent Handicap Placards are not obtainable from
the Borough or the Police Department. Please see the New
Jersey State MVS for all information on permanent placards.
Letter of Resident in Good Standing can be prepared for residents to help them qualify for certain employment opportunities or housing arrangements. Applicants for these letters can call or come by the Police Station with the following information: Name, address, birthdate, phone number, dates and number of years living in Edgewater. At that time the applicant can make arrangements for obtaining the letter, usually by the next business day.
Firearms ID and Permit Cards forms can be requested from the Police Department by mail or in person. Type or legibly print all application forms and complete all 30 questions. If any questions do not apply, indicate this with “N/A.” Lines 29(A) AND 30(b) require the names of two citizens who are personally acquainted with the applicant. In this section the applicant must include the reference’s name, address, zip code, and telephone number.
When the application is complete, the applicant must bring it to the Edgewater Police Department any Wednesday evening between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00. A Detective will take fingerprints and conduct an initial review.
In compliance with N.J.S. 2C58-3 (e), the applicant’s fingerprints will be forwarded to the New Jersey State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for comparison. These agencies charge a total of $49.00 for this service. Please have ready a money order, certified check, or cashier’s check in the amount of $49.00 made out to: Division of State Police – S.B.I. This fee is mandatory for processing all applications. The Borough of Edgewater does not charge a fee for the application processing; the above fee is forwarded to the N.J. State Police.
The Police Department will then conduct an investigation to determine whether the applicant does not meet any of the disabilities set forth by N.J.S. 2C:58-3 (e). The average processing time for all initial applications is about 8 to 12 weeks. However, processing time for applicants is subject to the return of all requisite forms from the involved agencies.
Once the application is processed and approved, the applicant will be notified by the Police Department. Applicants must sign the ID Card or Purchase Permit in the presence of the issuing Police Authority, therefore the applicant must appear personally. No ID Cards or Purchase Permits will be released to anyone other than the applicant.
Upon approval of the application, the following fees and dues are payable by check or money order to the Borough of Edgewater: $5.00 for the Firearms Identification Card, $2.00 for each Firearm Purchase Permit (handgun).
Please be assured that every possible effort will be made to process your application quickly.
